Medical Health Insurance - Qualifying Life Events

Qualifying life events (QLE) is a change in your life that can make you eligible to enroll in health insurance outside of the annual open enrollment period. Some common QLEs include:

  • Losing health coverage. This includes losing your job, having your hours reduced, or having your employer stop offering health insurance.

  • Getting married or divorced. If you get married, you may be able to add your spouse to your health insurance plan. If you get divorced, you may need to get your own health insurance plan.

  • Having a baby or adopting a child. If you have a baby or adopt a child, you may be able to add them to your health insurance plan.

  • Moving to a new area. If you move to a new area, you may need to get a new health insurance plan.

  • Change in income. If your income changes, you may be eligible for a different health insurance plan.

If you experience a QLE, you have 60 days to enroll in health insurance. You can enroll online, by phone, or by mail.

It's important to note that not all QLEs are created equal. Some QLEs, such as losing health coverage, allow you to enroll in any health insurance plan that's available in your area. Other QLEs, such as getting married, may only allow you to enroll in certain health insurance plans.

If you're not sure if you qualify for a QLE, or if you're not sure what type of health insurance plan you should get, you can contact a health insurance agent for help.

Here are some tips for choosing a health insurance plan after a qualifying life event:

  • Compare plans. There are many different health insurance plans available, so it's important to compare plans before you choose one. Compare the plans' premiums, deductibles, copays, and coverage limits.

  • Consider your needs. When you're comparing plans, it's important to consider your needs. Do you need prescription drug coverage? Do you need vision or dental coverage? Do you have any pre-existing conditions?

  • Get help from a qualified professional. If you're not sure how to choose a health insurance plan, you can get help from a qualified professional, such as a health insurance agent or a financial advisor.

Losing health insurance is a stressful event, but it's important to remember that you have options. If you experience a QLE, you have 60 days to enroll in health insurance. Use this time to compare plans and find one that meets your needs.
